The Department of Archaeology & Museums is a research
oriented academic institution, the aim of which is to
preserve ancient culture for the posterity through various
activities such as conducting explorations, excavations at
ancient habitiational and archaeological sites, conservation
and preservation of excavated sites and monuments,
conducting villagewise survey for registration of
antiquities, identification of archaeological sites and
collection of epigraphical material and identification of
historical monuments for their protection. Establishment of
museums in all the District Headquarters with a view to
educate the people about our culture and its development
through displaying artefacts in general and in particular of
A.P. for knowing the cultural milieu of A.P. for which the
Department is functioning with seven branches headed by the
Commissioner.
Each branch under the supervision of a Deputy Director
is functioning with the assistance of Assistant Directors
who are in turn having technical staff under their control
for the execution of concerned works. It is broadly divided
into seven faculties i.e.
(1) Survey, Exploration and conducting of
Excavations,
(2)Conservation
of Monuments,
(3)
Epigraphical Survey,
(4) Bringing out research oriented
publications,
(5) Development of departmental
libraries,
(6) Establishement and maintenance of
District/Site Museums,
(7)Administration
and Accounts
It has been proposed to develop the department with modern
technology by computerization/digitization of the material
pertaining to the seven faculties for which the preparation
of the data on monthly basis has been entrusted to the
concerned staff and also the works already taken up i.e.
preparation of exhaustive reports on excavations,
explorations, preparation of plans, drawings, elevations and
boundary particulars, etc of the monuments, reprinting of
rare books published by the department and preparation of
material out of the research work done so far in all the
branches besides preparation of data pertaining to their
branches for computerization. In addition to that, the
detailed preparation of text and interpretation of the
inscriptions for which monthly review will be done by the
Deputy Director concerned and the same will be appraised by
the Commissioner.
It is proposed to arrange training programmes like
(a) new techniques and trends in excavations,
(b) reorganizations of display of objects in the Museums on
modern lines and
(c) presentation of reports (excavations) on modern lines in
association with the experts in the concerned fields to
train up the technical staff of the department in advanced
technology. It is also proposed by the Department to have a
display board showing the activities of the department both
at Headquarters and District Offices.
