EPIGRAPHY

Epigraphy Reports

a) Nature of work: The Section is looking after the copying of all the lithic and copper plate inscriptions in the State by conducting village wise survey and publishing them through Annual Reports on Epigraphy; District Volumes of Inscriptions and Journal of Epigraphia Andhrica.

b) No. of inscriptions collected: So far, the Section has collected over 7,500 Estampages of lithic records besides over 150 copper plate records. The inscriptions range in date from Prakrit-Brahmi of 1st-2nd CAD records to the late Telugu records of 16th- 17th CAD. They. belong to various dynasties such as Satavahana, Ikshvaku, VishnuKundin, Rasthrakuta, Kalyani, Badami, Vengi, Eastern and Western Chalukyans , Kakatiyas, Reddi, Vijayanagara, Bahmani, Qutub Shahi and Asaf Jahis and Local Chiefs such as Velamas, Padma Nayakas, and Haihayas besides a large number of private records.

c) Epigraphical survey completed in districts: Nizamabad, Rangareddy, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda, Mahaboobnagar, Medak, Cuddapah, Kurnool.

d) Survey to be done in the remaining districts in Andhra Pradesh.

e) No. of publications brought out: The Section has so far brought out three Annual Reports on Epigraphy for the year 1965,66 and 67, and for District Volumes of Inscriptions for Warangal, Cuddapah, Karimnagar,Kurnool,Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar. Similarly 6 Volumes of Epigraphia Andhrica have also been brought out.

An example of an inscription:

Location:Nasurullabad(V),Jadcharla(m),Mahbubnagar District. Gist:The Inscription registers the grant of wet land measuring 96acres to the priest of the temple of Surya(Aditya) at the time of its consecration by the chief queen(Paramabhataraka)of the crown Prince Rajaditya.
